Met een vertraging en in de regen wordt ik verwelkomd in Toronto. Deze miljoenenstad is de eerste stop van zo'n 20 dagen in Canada.
Ik verbleef in het HI-Hostel aan Church street, met letterlijk een kerk aan de overkant (St. James Church). De ligging is zo centraal, dat ik ondanks de groote van de stad, het meeste lopend gedaan heb.
De bekende foodmarket St. Lawrence is bijvoorbeeld maar een blokje verder. Wat verder weg, maar nog prima te lopen, is China Town. Ongeveer een half uurtje of iets langer. Ook daar kun je lekker (en goedkoop!) eten. Maar je kunt er ook Chinese souvenirs, verse groente en fruit kopen en Kensington Market (hippie-achtige winkeltjes in en rond Baldwin street) en de Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) bezoeken. In het AGO heb ik de meeste tijd doorgebracht in de Canadese galleries. Ik ben tenslotte in Canada...
De CN-tower vond ik nogal aan de dure kant (zo'n 32 dollar om naar boven te gaan, ongeveer 20 Euro). Dus heb ik nog een tweede museum bezocht, het Royal Ontario Museum (ROM, ze houden van afkortingen hier). De tentoonstelling over de First Nation people was mooi opgezet. Maar het was maar een klein stukje van het grote, museum waar je verder nog tussen de dinosaurusskeletten en andere cultureel verantwoorde tentoonstellingen kunt dwalen.
Toronto ligt aan het water, Lake Ontario, om precies te zijn. Een enorm meer. Je kunt een wandelingetje maken langs het Water front, of waar ik niet aan toe ben gekomen, de ferry nemen naar de Toronto Islands. Ik ben wel naar het strand geweest. 's avonds. Niet om te gaan zwemmen (te koud), maar om naar het vuurwerk te kijken voor Victoria Day. En ik zat niet in mijn eentje op het frisse stand, maar ik was mee met Melissa (niet mijn zusje, dit was een Canadese die ik in Rome ontmoet heb) en een paar van haar studievrienden. Ook mee naar het strand waren een paar blikjes Steam Whisle bier. Bier dat wordt gebrouwen in hartje Toronto (bijna letterlijk naast de bekende CN-tower). Daar hadden we voor het tripje naar het strand een tour gedaan (gratis blikje bier + tour door de brouwerij + glaasje bier achteraf). Dat was ook voor mij als ik-drink-bijna-nooit-bierdrinker een leuke (en verassend lekkere) tour. Ook met dank aan de leuke tourguide met het meest toffe afrokapsel dat ik gezien heb.
Toronto was in ieder geval super tof! Ondertussen zit ik nu in Guelph, voor een familiebezoekje.

My flight from Iceland landed with a delay on the rainy international airport of Toronto. This huge city is the first stop for the 20 days I have in Canada.
I stayed at the HI-Hostel at Church Street, with a church (St. James Church) right across the street, how fitting! It has a great central location, even so that I could walk over to most of the places.
The famous foodmarket St. Lawrence Market, for example was only one block away. A little bit of a longer walk, but very do-able was the thirty-minute or so, walk to China Town. Another great place to catch a good (and cheap!) meal. But it's also a great place to buy some Chinese souvenirs, fresh fruits and vegtables and visit Kensington market (hippie-like shops in and around Baldwin street) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). At AGO, I spend most of my time at the Canadian galleries. I'm in Canada after all...
Going up on the CN-tower I found a little bit expensive (32 dollar or so). Instead I visited another big museum, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). All though it was only a small part of the museum, I liked the exhibition on the First Nations. Most of the museum is dedicated to dinosaurs and other cultural exhibitions that take some time to wander through.
Toronto lays at Lake Ontario. You can walk along the water front or, go to the Toronto Islands (I didn't have time for that though).
But you can also go to the beach! And I did that at night. Not to go for a swim (way to cold for that) but to watch the fireworks on Victoria Day. And best of all, I didn't do that alone, I got to spend the evening with Melissa (not to be confused by younger sister) who I met in Rome four years ago and some of her friends. We also to a few cans of Steam Whisle beer with us. This beer is brewed at the hart of the Toronto city (almost next to the CN-tower). We had gone on a brewery tour, before going to the beach. And even for someone who doesn't drink beer so often, it was a great (and surprisingly tasty) tour! Also a thank you for the great tour guide with the biggest and coolest looking afro-hair-do I've seen so far.
Toronto has been great and at the moment I'm in Guelph for a family visit.
